Third time lucky

Third go at the same, or similar, pose though the model on Tuesday was different to the one on the previous two Mondays. Felt tip on A2, about 90 minutes.

Then started blocking in the backgroun at home.

Tuesday 20 May 2014

Gesture

First some 5 minutes poses in pen using long sticks and drawing on the floor. All drawings were on 30"x22"

Continuous line two minutes and three minutes wrong hand. Still using sticks.

Some two minutes now standing up.

Two 30 seconds and one 1 minute.

Some three minutes using both hands in charcoal and charcoal pencil.

Then two longer poses, about 15 minutes each, in charcoal and charcoal pencil.

Colour and crop

Same reclining pose as last week. All my pastel paper was long and thin so I decided on a crop. About 1 hour 30 minutes on 19"x12.5" hard pastels.

I tried a quick drawing to check whether I'd chosen the right orientation for the crop in the last 15 minutes though to be honest I think a square crop would have worked better. Coloured pencil on A2.

Wonky Lines

Short poses were with long canes with the board on the floor. All 5 minutes on 30"x22"
Long poses we were told to concentrate on negative spaces. I was trying to think about double exposure photos or Muybridge but the two poses. Here is the line drawing for the two 30 minute poses, 30"x22" paper with conte pencils.

Added some shading to at least differentiate the two.

Channelling Gauguin

The pose tonight was based on the Gauguin painting Te Arii Lahine (The King's Wife) and decided to use oil pastels for their bright colour. Went too detailed and started too red but interesting experiment. This was at the end of the 1 hour 40 session. Picture is just under A2.

I then added the background and darkened a few shadows at home.

Drip, drip, drip

No short poses on Tuesday. First ones were 20 minutes in charcoal. Paper is about 24"x22".

Long pose was very horizontal so I tried to counter-act that with vertical drips. Water soluble wax pastels on 30"x22", about 50 minutes.

Worked on it at home to try and get the effect I was looking for. The background is working better than the figure as I don't like that hard outline.

Paint and powder

Two long poses for an all day session. Both about two hours. First acrylic on 24"x20"

Then charcoal pencils on toned A1 paper.
